The artisans.

THE ARTISANS FEATURED IN DEHIYA SOUQ ARE ALL LOCAL TO MOROCCO AND HAVE BEEN HONING THEIR CRAFT FOR YEARS–MANY FOR GENERATIONS.

RASHID, LINEN WEAVER Rashid is a 43 years old man from the old part of Marrakech. Rashid grew up in the streets of Marrakech and learned towel making from the eldest teachers in Marrakech. After saving up the money he made selling his work, he opened his own workshop, where he teaches other young people the art of towel weaving. He now runs the business alongside his two younger brothers.

FATIMA + CO-OP, RUGS Rugs used for these poufs were made at a select few women-owned co-ops outside of Essaouira, Morocco. Others are old “vintage” rugs passed along to them. Fatima, the head of one of the co-ops collects the rugs from the other women and brings them to Marrakech, where she sells them to artisans and resellers on behalf of the women.

MOSTAPHA, BABOUCHE SLIPPERS There is a well known cobbler lmaalam (the teacher) Mostapha who owns a small workshop in the Medina he works along side two other guys, who himself taught them. And since pandemic he is working from home.
